MOMMY MAKEOVER

The term “Mommy Makeover” refers to the rejuvenation of body parts that were stretched, altered, or damaged by pregnancy and breastfeeding. The surgical procedures involved in a Mommy Makeover may treat the abdomen, the breasts or both.

Mommy Makeover Pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding young children put a tremendous amount of strain on a woman’s body and affect the appearance of the abdomen and breasts. While pregnant, and especially in the last trimester, the presence of the baby in the uterus causes stretching of the abdominal muscles, skin, and soft tissue. For many women these tissues return to normal after delivery, but sometimes the skin and muscle remain permanently loose. This appears as either an excess of tissue of the lower abdomen, or in more severe cases, as an “apron” of skin that hangs over the pubic area. The “sixpack” muscles also will sometimes not repair themselves, which will result in a loose abdominal wall, even if the overlying skin itself is not loose. Women with this condition complain that at certain times of the day, especially after meals, they look like they are still pregnant because the “sixpack” muscle cannot retain their expanded stomach.

The increase in size of the breast during pregnancy and during breastfeeding can cause the skin to stretch beyond its ability to recover. Once breastfeeding stops, the glandular tissue will shrink in size, remain large, or return to normal. As a result, the breasts can seem deflated and droopy with less volume than before, or heavy and uncomfortable.

Mommy Makeover Surgery Recovery

Most of the time procedures for the abdomen and breast can be performed at the same time, allowing the woman to recover from both procedures at once. Most patients take one week or more off from work, depending on the level of the surgery and how the patient feels. Compared to other plastic surgery procedures, a tummy tuck requires a longer recovery time. If you have a tummy tuck as part of your Mommy Makeover, it may take up to three weeks before you can return to normal activity.

Mommy Makeover Results

Most patients see their results immediately and, over the months following your surgery, your skin’s surface will become even firmer. Scars will start to lighten in color but it may take a year or more before they resolve to some degree. For patients who undergo breast surgery, it may take six months to one year for your breasts to settle into their current shape.
