Scar removal surgery is a procedure that can improve the appearance of the patient’s scars on the face or body. Depending on the location of the scar, removal may also improve functioning if the scar interferes with movement.

Scarring is the process by which the body heals itself of wounds caused by accidents and surgery. Each person scars differently because of a combination of factors such as genetics, age, ethnicity, medication, disease, and surgical technique. In a healing wound, scar starts forming early on, within the first week. In a well-closed wound the scar tissue will increase until somewhere between one and three months, at which time the scar may appear pink and raised. Over the next several months the scar goes through a long maturation process that can take up to 18 months but is often complete by 9 to 12 months. During this time the scar gradually becomes thinner, less raised, softer, white, and even a little shorter.

Unfortunately, some wounds do not heal ideally, or were not sutured well in the emergency department or by the operating room doctor. Scars may remain thickened and wide, or with poorly-aligned wound edges causing a divot or depression. These types of scars can easily be improved with a scar revision surgery at our facility.

Initial Consultation

Dr. Doezie will meet with you and address any questions or concerns that you may have as well as go over the risks of the procedure. His assistant will accompany him and a quote will be given to you before you leave your appointment.

The Procedure

Dr. Doezie will determine the appropriate technique used to treat your scar. Revision usually consists of cutting out the old scar and carefully suturing the skin edges together with multiple layers of stitches that often are absorbable and do not need to be removed. The procedure is most often done in the office under local anesthesia. However, if the scar is very large, or if the patient is a child and needs to be sedated, the operation can be done at a surgery center.

An office consultation with Dr. Doezie will allow him to determine if your scar can be improved with a revisional surgery.

Results

Immediately following your surgery your skin may appear red and swollen. Over the next few weeks, as you heal, discoloration will subside and the scar will refine. It may take several months for the results to become visible; in some cases it could take up to a year. The results however, will be long lasting.
