Recovering From Breast Augmentation

After a breast augmentation procedure, your body requires enough time to heal and rest. Through it all, remember that recovery is not just about healing; it is also about understanding your body, pacing yourself, and knowing when you can safely get back to doing the things you love. While everybody’s experience is unique, most people can expect:

  • Soreness and swelling, especially during the first few days
  • A feeling of tightness in the chest
  • A gradual return to mobility and energy restoration over the next few weeks

During your breast augmentation consultation, your plastic surgeon will walk you through what to expect before, during, and after the procedure. They will also provide specific instructions on recovery and how to maintain your results. Following these guidelines will not only speed up your recovery but also improve your results in the long run.

After Breast Augmentation, When Can I…

When can I go back to work?

Most people feel well enough to go back to work within one to two weeks of their procedure, especially if their job is not physically demanding or they work from home or at a desk. However, if your role is active and involves a lot of heavy lifting, you may have to wait three weeks before returning to the grind.

When can I have sexual intercourse?

Generally, it is recommended that you wait approximately two weeks or until you are feeling well enough after your procedure before resuming sexual intercourse. Even after the wait, be sure to ease into it gently and avoid anything that involves putting pressure on your chest. This allows the implants to settle naturally, reducing the risk of complications such as infection and bleeding. It is essential that you discuss your individual recovery time with your surgeon, as factors such as the complexity of the procedure and your general health can impact recovery.

When can I go running and resume exercising?

Gentle walks are encouraged one to two days after the surgery to promote blood circulation and optimal healing. Just remember to take it easy and don’t push yourself. For weightlifting, cardio, running, or any other intense exercise, you will have to wait at least three weeks, or until your surgeon clears you.

When can I sleep on my side?

After breast augmentation, you should sleep on your back with your head slightly elevated, especially for the first week or so. Stacking pillows or using a special wedge pillow is ideal to keep you comfortable in this position. Sleeping with your back and head elevated reduces pressure on the incisions, thereby decreasing the likelihood of swelling. While sleeping on your side might seem tempting and much more comfortable, it can irritate the healing tissues or even shift your implants. You can gradually resume sleeping on your side as your doctor clears you.

When can I wear a regular bra after breast augmentation?

Right after breast augmentation surgery, you will be given a surgical bra to enhance comfort and healing, reduce swelling, and maintain the placement of your implants. Avoid regular underwire bras for approximately six weeks, or until your surgeon gives you the green light. Once your surgeon clears you, you can explore new bra styles to suit your new shape.
