A brow lift procedure is a cosmetic surgery that improves the look of the facial region between the upper eyelids and the scalp, covering the temples. The procedure may treat the result of heredity or the natural aging process that has caused visible creases and deep furrows in the brow. In some people, specific habitual facial expressions may create contraction of underlying muscles and cause deep wrinkles that cannot be treated with injectables like BOTOX®. Surgical intervention will develop a softer, relaxed and rejuvenated facial appearance. It may also reposition a low brow that seems to cover the eyelids.

Specifically, brow lift surgery can:

  • Correct low placement or sagging of the brows
  • Minimize the appearance of lines and creases in the forehead
  • Reduce furrows and frowns and other signs of aging
  • Raise the eyebrows to give a more alert and youthful look

Best Candidates for the procedure

Good brow lift candidates:

  • Are in over all good health
  • Have noticeable sagging or creasing along the forehead
  • Have realistic expectation for their outcome
  • Do not have life-threatening conditions or illnesses that can impair healing
  • Are Non-Smokers

The Procedure

During the procedure, a number of small incisions are made within the hairline or on the natural creases of each upper eyelid; this is called endoscopic brow lift that has minimal scarring and is less invasive. A wide incision across the top of the scalp may also be used where sagging of skin is in excess; this is referred to as traditional brow lift surgery. The tissue and muscle beneath the skin are repositioned, altered or removed. Excess skin is trimmed away and the remaining skin is repositioned over the brow and sewn into place.

Brow lift surgery often forms a part of other rejuvenation procedures such as eyelid surgery or a facelift that may be opted for by adult men and women for various professional or personal reasons. A requirement for this surgery is good health; i.e., no evidence of a life-threatening illness or medical condition that may hamper healing. The patient should preferably be a non-smoker with a positive outlook and specific reasons for selecting the surgery. Smokers are advised to stop smoking for several weeks prior to the surgery procedure to minimize recovery time and prevent smoking-related complications.

Recovery

After the surgical procedure is completed, the forehead or other areas may be taped and the head may be wrapped to minimize swelling and bruising. Excess fluid that may build up due to surgery may be drained through a small tube that will be placed in the area temporarily. Medication will be administered to deal with swelling, numbness and discomfort. You will be advised to keep facial movements to a minimum to aid in healing. As healing takes place, an itch may be felt in the scalp or the incision sites, which is a good sign though you should not scratch.

A return to normal activity may be possible a few days of surgery; however, care must be taken to keep your head elevated until all traces of swelling have disappeared. Dr. Doezie will give you specific instructions about cleansing of your face and hair. Sutures or clips will be removed after 5 to 10 days.

Scaring may take a while to disappear as healing continues after the surgery. Until the healing is complete, keep away from sun exposure.

Results

Once you have completely healed you will notice a significant change in the look of your brow; signed of aging like creases, frowns and wrinkles get erased by the procedure. The most visible signs of surgery should disappear within a few weeks. Most patients are usually very satisfied with their new look.

Patients should discuss all their health issues with the doctor, such as the side effects of any medicine. Any health issues that may be part of the patient’s present condition will be discussed.

Risks associated with brow lift surgery include:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding beneath the skin (hematoma)
